Though fish production in Lake Kivu is increasing after stopping illegal fishing and fishing, Nyamasheke District has decided to add on Lake Kivu fish production by creating fish ponds for more production.
According to the in charge of animal husbandry in Nyamasheke District Félix Sindayiheba, with the support of PAIGELAC tilapia type of fish had already been planted in these fish ponds and decisions have been made to feed them mixture of concentrated food so as to have healthy and big fish where 3 fish will be weighing 1Kg.
He went on to say that cooperatives that take care of these fish ponds are encouraged to take good care of them and to make them productive where it is expected to be at least 30 KGS of fish on 1 are in a period of 6 months.
He said that fish ponds that were dug on 6 hectares in Bushekeri, Karengera, Ruharambuga, Shangi and Macuba sectors should also be well taken care of. Fish p-roduction increased by 25percent in 3 months to 93.5percent.
Now fishing is done in cooperatives that are the head cooperative called UCOOPEVEPNYA (union des cooperatives de pecheurs et vendeuses de poisson _NYAMASHEKE) which brings together 9 cooperatives that fish and 6 cooperatives that sell fish.
These cooperatives have responsibilities of fighting against fishers who use poor fishing tools and fishing young fish which destroys fish production.
