Foot and mouth disease

Foot and mouth disease infected cows are kept in isolated places

While Gatsibo, Nyagatare and Kayonza have had four months of mouth and foot disease among cows, the disease has been eradicated, Agnes Karibata; minister of agriculture has said.

Agnes Karibata revealed this on February 13th 2013 during the meeting Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi had with government officials, ministers, governors, district authorities and heads of public institutions.

The meeting was intended to evaluate the execution of performance contracts signed in this year 2013.

Minister Karibata explains that foot and mouth eradication was achieved through the cooperation of the district where infected cows were selected and put in isolated places.

Erneste Nsigayehe, Gatsibo district veterinarian revealed that the problem was solved and the animal markets will be opened soon.

The three districts have been under quarantine from February 12th 2013 without cow selling and buying to other neighboring districts, he adds.

Rwanda has been free from foot and mouth cattle disease for eight years but it is said that it was spread from Tanzania by the cows that could go to Gabiro in Gatsibo district for water.
