Zamuka Cooperative developing fish farming in Nyabihu

There are many different types of farming carried out in the district of Nyabihu like cattle rearing, Chicken farming and fish farming which is done from the different swamps and Lakes found there.

Fish farming however is developing because of Zamuka cooperative, as said by Jean d’Amour Nzibokora a member of the cooperative in Jenda sector Nyabihu district.

Zamuka cooperative started with protecting the environment especially at L.Nyirakigugu but later joined fish farming to make this lake more productive.

With this, the district and sector leadership helped the cooperative get support which helped them start farming in Tilapia from the Nyirakigugu Lake.

“Since 2007 when we started this job we have achieved a lot with fish worth Rwf 3million and a forest estimated at Rwf 10million”, narrated Nzibokora.

“We have about Rwf3 million on our account from the fish caught and sold”, added on Nzibokora, who said that he was able to finish university because of this cooperative.

The members are also able to get loans of about Rwf300000 from the cooperative and therefore be able to carry out some other projects.

People have also been able to improve on their feeding because of the fish they can be able to get at half a price, therefore no diseases related to poor feeding can be found in this sector.

He called on people to join such cooperatives since they will help them develop easily

This cooperative has about 60 members ever since it started in 2007 and was able to get support from The Inland Lakes Integrated Development and Management Support Project [PAIGELAC], which has helped it develop.
