51 poor and vulnerable families from six sectors of Burera district have been given cows in promotion of Girinka program to support their social-economic development for the New Year 2014.

The 51 families from Kinyababa, Kagogo, Cyanika, Rugarama, Gahunga and Kinoni sectors received the cows on January 3rd 2014.

These families were asked not to sell the given cows but take care of them to promote human health and economic status. They were also urged share the benefits with their neighbors in promotion of Girinka program.

Girinka program was initiated in 2006 by President Paul Kagame. It aims at enabling every poor household to own and manage one improved dairy cow to help them acquire better livelihood and living conditions through increased milk and meat production.

The main condition to this program is that families which are given cows are required to give off springs to their poor neighbours when the cows reproduce.
