Investor Lester Leow explained to these bee keepers that the purpose of his visit in Rulindo district is to train bee keepers to do it professionally, how to take care of the bees, how to make them productive and how to develop their families through bee keeping.

Bee keepers in Rulindo district say bee keeping on its own is not work that can provide for their families. This is especially due to low knowledge in bee keeping but with the introduction of Bee Keeping School, bee keeping will be of value and be done professionally.

“I have been in bee keeping for the last 5 years but there is no big production from this farming compared to the work I do and risks I take. I am grateful that we will have a school to help us do professional bee keeping” says Devothe Uwizeyimana one of the bee keepers in Rusiga sector.

The vice mayor for social affairs in Rulindo district Emilienne Niwemwiza told bee keepers that their economy is in their hands if they are willing to work hard.

Investor Lester Leow explained to the bee keepers that bees should be treated like livestock. “one takes good care of the cow to get good milk produce, bees should also be handled with care to give quality and enough honey” he said. “The reason you are not getting good and enough honey is because you do not take good care of the bees.”

Lefter Leow explained to bee keepers that he brought them knowledge and it is up to them to make use of it. Lefter Leow is a professional in bee keeping with more than 12 years of experience in bee keeping working in Uganda.

The school will open soon and bee farmers will be paying little enrollment fees.

The programme is part of the Rwanda Dairy Competitiveness Project II (RDCP II) and is intended to strengthen the dairy sector with Rwf40m ($63,000) worth of grants to 36 small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

The grants will be distributed through RDCP II, which is being implemented by Land O’Lakes International Development.

Speaking in an interview, scores of farmers in Nyagatare district welcomed the grant, saying that it is timely as it cements their already extensive desire to improve the quality of their milk products.

“We have already moved a tremendous step towards attaining the best standards of milk we supply to our buyers, especially Inyange industries. We hope that the grant that was earmarked in the dairy sector will reach all to folks of farming activities to help us keep the stake of improving milk products,” said Stephen Rwamurenzi, a model farmer in the district.

Nyagatare district tops other districts in the country with a big numbers of cattle, hence making it house many milk collection centres (MCCs).

Maurice Rulinda, another farmer in Rwimiyaga sector in the district said that due to high quantity of milk they supply, more support is needed in maintaining its quality.

“We supply thousands of litres of milk to different MCCs. We eye more support from the grant since we still experience issues of poor quality of milk that in the end drag us into losses,” he said.

According to USAID-Rwanda mission director, Peter Malnak, the programme would enhance quality, quantity and consistency of Rwandan dairy through training, inspecting, auditing and certifying of the dairy value chain actors, including farmers, transporters and milk-selling outlets in urban centres.

Beatrice Uwumukiza, the Rwanda Agriculture Livestock Inspection Services (RALIS) director general, noted that “the programme would ensure that quality milk and other dairy products are produced.’’

The Rwanda Agriculture Livestock Inspection Services and Rwanda Agricultural Board are the key implementing partners of the programme. They will carry out inspection and audit and, ultimately, award quality certification to stakeholders who will attain the pre-defined quality parameters of the seal of quality programme.

Girinka program was initiated by the president of the Republic of Rwanda in 2006 with the goal of every Rwandan to at least own one cow for social and economic welfare.

Two of the 33 cows are in their gestation period

This program is thriving in all parts of the country especially in Gatsibo district where 33 vulnerable families were on 30^th.April.2013 joined this program.

Ernest Nsigayehe the veterinary doctor in Gatsibo district says cows were given to the poorest and most vulnerable families in 4 sectors as 8 cows were given to families in Kabarore sector, 8 cows in Rwimbogo sector, 8 cows in Rugarama sector and 9 cows in Gitoki sector.

“These cows were distributed to the poorest and most vulnerable families in the 4 sectors as the 2^nd phase of Ubudehe program and 2 cows among 33 cows are expecting” says Nsigayehe.

Nsigayehe goes on to explain that when people are given cows, veterinary doctors in the sectors keep on following up the welfare of these cows and how they are cared for by the owners.

The vice mayor for finance and economic development of Gatsibo district says this is a very developmental government program that is set to improve the welfares of all the people especially in Poverty Reduction Strategies.

This programmes that was started in 2006 has seen about 10.000 people in the district get cows which the residents say is a very big bond between the Rwandan government and its people.

“One cow per family has helped us improve on our nutrition and also helped us get fertile land from where we grow crops that we feed on because of the fertilizers we get from cows”, said many of them.

While giving away 36 cows on the 29^th/04/2013, Angeline Habarugire from “Ngoboka Dufatanye” organization said that this programme has contributed a lot to improving peoples’ wellbeing.

“It is one good programme that has again helped fight HIV/AIDS in many families, and also contributed to development especially when families with them look after the cows well”, added on Habarugire.

This organization has so far given out 72 cows since 2011 in sectors of Kamegeri, Kibumbwe, Kaduha and Kibirizi given out to different cooperatives of vulnerable people and ones with AIDS.

“Nyamagabe district which had planned in 2012/2013 to give out about 2000 cows to its residents has so far achieved this at a 94%”, added on Expedite Musengiyaremye in charge of livestock farming in the district.

By March 2013 about 10.000 cows had been given out from the 53.575 cows registered in the whole district and 72.525 families still registered.

The agency has floated Rwf44 million (US$ 69,000), through the Eastern Region Genetic Improvement Cooperative (Eragic) which will be used to train dairy farmers in agricultural practices and artificially inseminate 1,200 dairy cows.

The donation enables the cooperative to train farmers, about half of whom will be women, in techniques that will maintain optimal health and nutrition for animals. Eragic will also demonstrate best handling and hygiene skills to enhance the quality of milk, while educating farmers on how to improve their business and cooperative management skills.

One of the Eragic dairy farmers, Claude Ngabonziza, says that the region has a big potential for producing milk however the farmers have been challenged with lack of training on modern dairy practices.

There are problems caused by lack of knowledge and skills, despite the immense potential of milk production.

“Most times the farmers don’t take safety and hygiene precautions which may affect the quality and quantity of milk. With the training available, I am hopeful that we will be at the center of supplying milk in the country,” said Ngabonziza.

The Eastern province is known for livestock farming and milk supply.

Government intends to construct a modern veterinary laboratory in Nyagatare district, Eastern Province, as part of Government’s plan to enhance, detect and respond to diseases that can affect the livestock.
